Tanzania is a country overflowing with beauty, breathtaking views, many unique experiences, and one of a kind places. Lake Tanganyika is one of those magnificent places! Not only is Lake Tanganyika the world’s longest (660km) fresh water lake; but it is also the second largest in the world at an astounding (1436m). This breathtaking lake is so large that it is easily seen from space.
Lake Tanganyika resides in Tanzania. However, it helps to establish a boundary between the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi, and Zambia. The water is known for its clear appearance, rich soil, and warm temperatures. At its depth, Lake Tanganyika stretches 1,470m; the second deepest freshwater lake in the world! Near the outskirts of the lake, the bottom is clearly visible exposing a variety of freshwater fish. There are more than 250 species in the lake. Many of these are unique to the area and have been thriving here for millions of years.
If you enjoy fishing, Lake Tanganyika is a magnificent place to visit. The lake is so massive it almost feels like it stretches on forever! The fish that you can see are unlike others in the area and are truly incredible. From tropical to strange and everything in between you’re sure to find a species of fish that excites you.
If fishing isn’t for you, Lake Tanganyika is also a great destination for snorkelers! The water is warm, and crystal clear which helps to create a perfect snorkeling climate. It is fun to discover the lake floor closer to the shore or venture way out to the deep darker waters teaming with unique sea life. Snorkelers travel from far and wide to explore the longest lake in the world and to witness sea life that can only been found here.
But, my favorite part of Lake Tanganyika is simply it’s beauty. It’s incredible to see a lake that is so big and to imagine that it is millions of years old and filled with history. The shores are a burgundy brown and have steep cliffs that encircle the lake. Looking down from the top of a cliff it almost looks like a punch bowl! Lake Tanganyika is truly a place of beauty and somewhere you will never forget.
