Twende Zanzibar (Let’s go to Zanzibar)
A short hop from the mainland of Tanzania is the island of Zanzibar; an island gem. With turquoise water and glistening sunshine, the island is a tourist’s dream. Zanzibar is rich in activities for the whole family! We are sure you are going to love it; I know I did! Surfs up! The island is known for its warm crystal-clear waters and breathtaking coral reefs. Tourists travel from far and wide to surf Zanzibar. The sand is fine and sparkling white and the waters are salty! The southwest coastline is perfect to try windsurfing because of the light wind breezes and perfectly rounded lagoons. But, if surfing is out of your comfort zone, snorkeling is another great option. The island is surrounded by extensive coral reefs. Anywhere you can find water, you will be able to swim with sea turtles, tropical fish, and explore the waters that they call home.
The island is also teaming with boats of all kinds. Take a ride around the reef and listen to upbeat music. My favorite memory from our trip was dancing to Swahili music with my family on the roof top of the wooden canoe we took at Kendwa beach. I loved diving off the roof top into the warm waters and exploring the waters below. If you love music and dancing, then the Sauti Za Busara Festival is a must see. This festival takes place in February in the heart of Stone Town. The festival spans four days and typically includes up to 40 shows. African musicians and DJs travel from multiple countries to participate in this year event. You are sure to enjoy music and cultural dancing in town or on the picturesque beach.
Stone Town & Evening Street Food
Stone town is one of the most well-known features of Zanzibar. The ancient buildings and unique architecture blend Arabian, Swahili, Indian, and Portuguese history. The ancient town is built tightly together to create a maze of alleys and intricate pathways. One unique feature of Stone Town is that it is mostly painted white with brown tin roofs. However, the markets bring color to Stone Town. Make sure to pick up some world-famous spices when you are in town! I’m sure you’ll love them!
In the evening, directly across from Stone Town, by the ocean, is a street teaming with street food vendors selling a rich variety of Zanzibari cuisine which is delicious and full of flavor! The spices are irresistible. When you visit Stone town, make sure you try out the street food in the evening. You will not regret it. Transportation in Zanzibar is less extensive than in Tanzania mainland. In Zanzibar, the most effective route of transportation is scooters. You can zip all over the island and even down to the white sand beaches! You can also be driven in car or rent your own car. Most roads in Zanzibar are two lane roads. However, the roads have many deep potholes. So, traffic is slow going.
All in all, Zanzibar is a wonderful island filled with beauty, culture, and adventure! I know that you are going to love exploring the island! In the comment section below, tell me what you are most excited to see in Zanzibar!
